A two-level Sustainable AI programme for university students — from foundational AI carbon literacy (101) to advanced Sustainable MLOps, Micro Data Centre design, and AI governance disclosure (201). Aligned with IndiaAI Mission and India AI Governance Guidelines 2025.

Delivery Model

101: 40 hours. 201: 60 hours including CoE lab sessions. GCF Sustainable AI CoE compute cluster access included. Minimum cohort: 20 students. Delivered in-person, virtual, or hybrid.

What participants learn

Module 01

AI's Environmental Footprint (101)

AI's carbon, water, and energy footprint — the real numbers. Training vs inference emissions. Why the India AI Governance Guidelines 2025 mandate sustainability. How AI's footprint compares to other IT workloads.

Module 02

Frugal AI Design Principles (101)

Smaller, contextualised models with RAG vs large foundation models. Model quantisation and distillation. CPU-native inference with Kompact AI (Ziroh Labs / IIT Madras). Hands-on: kgCO₂e measurement with BirchLogic.

Module 03

Carbon-Aware AI Systems (101 & 201)

Carbon-aware scheduling for AI training. Grid carbon intensity and workload placement. The Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) standard — ISO certified December 2025. IndiaAI Mission's AIKosh dataset sustainability metrics.

Module 04

Sustainable MLOps & Governance (201)

Embedding carbon as a first-class metric in ML pipelines. MLflow + BirchLogic integration. Model cards with carbon, bias, and governance disclosure. AI sustainability governance — accountability and reporting.

Module 05

Micro Data Centre Design & Deployment (201)

VigyanLabs IPM+ Micro DC — PUE 1.2 vs India average 1.8. On-premise AI sovereignty and DPDP Act compliance. Capstone: Deploy a real AI workload on the GCF Sustainable AI CoE compute cluster.
